Wicca - Basic Beliefs

Posted on Sep 6th, 2008 by Phoenix : Reborn and Complete Phoenix

Here are 13 basic principles that describe what many Witches believe as their core faith. Keep in mind that there is no principle doctrine such as the Bible in Witchcraft, therefore individual traditions vary within their practices.

1. We practice rites to attune ourselves with the natural rhythm of life forces.
2. We recognize that our intelligence gives us a unique responsibility toward our environment.
3. We acknowledge a depth of power far greater than is apparent to the average person.
4. We conceive of the Creative Power in the Universe as both masculine and feminine. We value neither gender above the other.
5. We recognize both outer world and inner psychological worlds, and we see in the interaction of these two dimensions the basis for paranormal and magickal exercises.
6. We do not recognize any authoritarian hierarchy.
7. We see religion, magick, and wisdom-in-living as being united in the way one views the world and lives in it.
8. Calling oneself a "witch" does not make a witch, but neither does heredity, or the collection of titles, degrees and initiations. A witch seeks to control the forces within him-or herself that make life possible in order to live wisely and well, without harm to others, and in harmony with nature.
9. We acknowledge that it is the affirmation and fulfillment of life, in a continuation of evolution and the development of consciousness, that gives meaning to the Universe we know, and to our personal role within it.
10. Our only animosity toward Christianity, or toward any other religion or philosophy of life, is that its institutions have claimed to be "the one true, right and only way" and have sought to deny freedom to others and to suppress other ways of religious practices and beliefs.
11. We are not threatened by debates on the history of the craft. We are concerned with our present and our future.
12. We do not accept the concept of absolute evil, nor do we worship any entity known as "Satan" or "Devil" as defined by Christian traditions.
13. We work within Nature for that which contributes to our health and well-being.

Interesting blog which i enjoyed, Phoenix , thank you for sharing your faith,  there is much to agree with and appreciate here, I also believe we should work with nature and the creative power behind the universe to grow and evolve.  I have a question  to clarify regarding
We acknowledge a depth of power far greater than is apparent to the average person.
Natures power ? Universal power? Individual power? Some other?
Interesting that while the church sought to suppress and burned witches in the old days,  it also adopted Mabon as it's own celebration of harvest festival, nice artwork in the last video btw.. My garden is a bit like harvest festival at the moment, it has been wet wet wet, and we had thick cloud cover most days, and the outdoor tomatoes all keeled over with blight again but the sweetcorn greens pumpkins, courgettes, turks turban squash, cucumbers, pumpkins melons onion peas beans and root veg have all  done well.
Is this faith celtic in origin?

yes, interesting isn't it? the church integrated and assimilated many “pagan” celebrations and beliefs into its calendar and practice while not understand and vilifying others.

(i do love hearing about your garden, thanks, dear friend!)

I am really pleased that you are blogging more about your faith. I'm finding it not only interesting in general knowledge but knowing more about my friends always makes me feel closer to them.

Hugs to you both!

Hi Guys!
Zephyr - yes there is allot of Celtic influences in some traditions within, from celebrating Celtic and Nordic Gods and Goddesses to some similar celebrations - I will go into details in future blog entries.

To answer your question - the power spoken about (magick, spellwork, healing, divination and so forth) actually is the natural power that lays within all people, but is cultivated through directed practice, in witchcraft. For example Reiki, or distant healing would be one aspect of it. We as witches are aware of this to be a real power, a very strong power, exspecially if trained and if you know how to direct it. That is what it means to me when that section speaks about “depth of power far greater than is apparent to the average person”. It is possible for anyone to learn to channel what is already there. So its by no means a greater power, just a trained aspect of one's natural ability to connect with the universal energy, and it's laws.

Nicole - I will write more about the history on the traditions that are actually pagan, but are now assimilated to the mainstream religions as each holiday comes closer - starting with Halloween. Thank you again for encouraging me to write this blog - both of you!

Blessed be!
